Pastor Jonathan serves with a passion for justice and community advocacy with a deep love for congregational care. He received a Certificate of Pastoral Leadership from Lexington Theological Seminary and an M.A. in Ethics and Justice, from the United Seminary of the Twin Cities. Jonathan has been involved in the United Church of Christ ministry for over a decade as a director of music and youth group leader before moving on to pastoral and justice ministries. Jonathan also brings experience as a Corporate Social Responsibility consultant.
He currently sits on the Executive Board of Metropolitan Area Religious Coalition of Cincinnati (MARCC) and is a youth ministry leader for the Heartland Conference, United Church of Christ.
As an Open and Affirming Pastor, diversity, equity, and inclusion in the church are an important aspect of Jonathan’s ministry. Creating safe and affirming spaces for every beloved child of God is paramount in Immanuel’s church culture, and Jonathan is a strong advocate in continuing and building upon this mission. No matter who you are, regardless of race, language, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, age, addiction, mental health illness, or country of origin, you are welcome and affirmed at Immanuel United Church of Christ, St. Bernard, Ohio.
Bernie-Max was born in Cincinnati, where he grew up in both Northside and New Burlington. As a youth he attended First United Church of Christ on Hoffner St. in Northside. Upon graduation he entered the world of banking living in Cincinnati, New York City & San Francisco. Also, while living in San Francisco he became an award winning Taxicab driver & Tour guide to the entire Bay Area including Wine Country. In May 2012 while driving cross country, and stopping in Cincinnati, he reconnected with First UCC, now located in College Hill. He decided to remain in Cincinnati where he is active in many church activities including Co-Chef of Fishes & Loaves feeding program and President of the church board. After a short while back he became Administrative Assistant with Immanuel UCC and is looking forward to many years of service here.
